GIRLS, T H E Y ’VE GOT THEIR
EYES O N US
In the “ wake,” funny column o f
the Chicago Daily Tribune, the lesser
wits o f the V ox Populi contribute
their cynicisms, adding considerable
interest to the study o f H. L. M.’s

to the Editor o f the Evening
Public Ledger:
Sir— I cannot understand why peo
ple will persist in calling the Am er

lish money and amounts to 2 cents
American money. There is the term
penny in the American language, but
it is only used in a general way, as,
fo r instance, one says, “ It cost a
pretty penny.”
A. J. GRAY.
[T he word “ penny” applied to the
United States “ cent,” which is worth
a trifle less than half the present
value o f an English penny, is em
ployed in this country not only collo
quially and with the authority of
long usage but also o f dictionary
definition. One o f these definitions
is “ any coin or sum o f trifling value.“
