A VISIT TO P H IL A D E L P H IA
By O. C. L IG H T N E R
On going through the Sesqui-Cen-
tennial Exposition we heard people
remark that there was nothing to it
but vending machines. W ell, it is
true that the exposition turned out
to be somewhat o f a fiasco and it is
quite true that vending machines o f
various types were to be seen at
every step the visitor took. The
Wilbur Chocolate Company had hun
dreds o f five cent chocolate-bar ven
ders throughout the grounds, which
seemed to take in good money. A
revolving selective machine put out
by the H off Vending Machine Com
pany o f New Y ork was in evidence
on every hand, vending W rigley's
gums. O f course, scales were quite
numerous.. A new one I noticed was
Made by the Colonial Scale Company.
There was also a new type o f a ma
chine in the washrooms which vended
two paper towels fo r a penny, and
these machines got constant patron
age.
The Seeburg Piano Company had
an exhibit o f their Automatic Pianos
and they had a larger crowd around
their booth than any we saw in the
building.
While in Philadelphia I called on
the Gatter N ovelty Company and had
a pleasant talk with Mr. Gatter at
his factory. They are working on a
new machine, * which they hope to
have completed before long, at which
time the announcement will appear
in the A U T O M A T IC A GE. Mr.
Gatter said that he was expecting to
attend the New York convention and
Would no doubt have his machine
ready by that time.

*ng Company and enjoyed an hours

conversation with Mr. S. Einson, the
manager. These people are jobbers
o f vending machine supplies o f all
kinds, as well as manufacturers o f
their own machines. Mr. Einson has
volunteered to hand out sample
copies o f the A U T O M A T IC A GE to
operators who visit their place, and
we would like to get all the different
jobbers to take that much interest, as
we believe there are still a few vend
ing machine operators in the coun
try who do not subscribe to the
A U T O M A T IC AGE. W e want to
make it as near 100 per cent as pos
sible.
Wants to Hear From
Manufacturers
Have just moved to my new and
large display and sales-room at 835
Chauncy Avenue, this city.
Will you kindly change my address
to the above so that I will get my
paper there as I do not care to miss
a single copy.
W ould like to hear from manufac
turers who desire representation and
display in this city and W ashington,
D. C., as I am well known to all the
operators o f these cities and have
been selling them supplies fo r some
time, and expect to greatly increase
this.
Thanking you fo r past fa v o rs, I am

A fter a careful survey o f the
arcades in and about New Y ork City,
it was found that there are in the
city proper 11 penny arcades, and
about 25 arcades in cities right ad
joining New York. The owners o f
these arcades had no way o f getting
together— each man having to stand
his own ground.
A few more aggressive arcade men,
got together and an organization of
the arcade owners was form ed. This
organization holds meetings monthly
to decide on what is best fo r the bus
iness— and to get together on things
in general. A fter the last meeting
fo r the season, a big blow out was
had, at which a good time was had
by all.
The
A U T O M A T IC
A GE was
adopted as the official organ o f the
organization, o f which Mr. M. Schaf
fer o f the Radio Amusement Com
pany is president; Mr. A. Schlack,
Vice-President, and Mr. William Rab
kin o f the International Mutoscope
Reel Company, secretary. Mr. M.
Benedict is treasurer.
The first meeting fo r the new sea
son will be held shortly. The A U T O
M A TIC A GE will be kept posted on
the activities o f the organization.
It may also interest your readers
to know, that during his travels all
over the country, Mr. Rabkin, iound
a very sincere interest in coin oper
ated machines, and while there are
still a number o f fly-by-night ma
chines being used, the tendency seems
to be towards standardization o f a
few solid well built machines.
Operators, it seems are learning,
that it is not only the original cost
o f the machine which counts, but its
ability to stand up under hard wear,
and to make money with no trouble.
T he demand seems to be fo r stronger
and better machines.
One outstanding feature o f the

Mutoscope, and one o f its main rea-
sonss fo r being so popular is the fact
that it comes up to these standards.
There are still Mutoscopes being used
today with
apparent
satisfaction
which were built about 25 and 30
years ago.
Our suggestion to machine manu
facturers is that they sacrifice price
to quality, even though they may lose
some sales at first— because, they will
find, as we have from past experi
ence, that the only way to get the
repeat orders, is to build quality ma
chines.

Rather Miss a Meal
A U T O M A T IC A G E :
Your notice at hand that my
subscription fo r the year o f 1926
has expired and that you have re
newed it fo r the year o f 1927 which,
I here enclose $1.00 and want to
thank you fo r notifying me as I
would not be without the A U T O
M A TIC AGE. I would rather miss a
meal than miss a copy o f the A U T O
M A TIC AGE. It is small but mighty
and all good things come small. I
here again thank you fo r notifying
me and want you to notify me as soon
as my subscription expires in 1927.

Lntest fashion in England is fo r
women to indicate their status or
mood Dy ear ornaments. Two ear
rings means a woman is married; one
in the right ear, that she is engaged.
Circles and ropes o f gems indicate
that she desires no new acquaint
ances, while ear ornaments in the
form o f bells denote that she is out
fo r a good time.
