Pigeons Patronize
Vending Machines
“ In fron t o f a candy store in
Broadway, Union Hill, N. J.,” writes
G. L. Androus, a New Y ork designer,
“ is a glass globe peanut receptacle.
A boy dropped his penny in the slot,
taking out the peanuts. Tw o pigeons
flew up, each pushing the other away
to get his head in the opening fo r the
pieces o f nuts left.
Afterward I
dropped a penny in, leaving some
peanuts in the opening. The pigeons
flew up as before and fought each
other to get what was left.
“ They kept flapping their wings to
keep themselves in place, as there
was nothing they could rest on. A s
I have your paper I always look fo r
your interesting articles. Only I wish
they could be longer. The pigeons
made me think o f you. I think you
could get them to take food out o f
your hand.”
There can be no doubt that the
descendants o f the rock pigeon o f
Europe, living often as free citizens
o f our American towns, have evolved
somewhat. They show bits o f wis
dom acquired from nibbing albows
with us. Many a man feels in the
telephone slot to see if an unretrieved
nickel is there.
