We Are Getting
An Interesting Collection
of manufacturers’ catalogs
showing every kind of automatic coin-controlled device in exist
ence. We wish that all manufacturers would send us a copy of
their catalog and other printed matter so that we might complete
this most interesting library. The extent of it is already surpris
ing and by the time it is completed it will be especially interesting
even to the older men in the trade.
We Have Received
More or Less Complaint
during the past month regard
ing non-delivery of THE AUTOMATIC AGE to subscribers; and
we have gone to considerable trouble to trace down the difficulty.
We find that quite often postal clerks and distributors do not
know the proper rates o f postage under the new law which has
caused so much confusion. For instance a paper of 24 pages or
more weighing up to eight ounces is mailed under a special catalog
rate of one cent each. The regular third class rate on this, how
ever, would be one and one-half cents each, and postal clerks often

throw out or refuse to deliver some of the papers because they
think it is short of proper postage. If you do not receive your
paper in due time protest to your carrier and he may find it at his
post office laid aside for lack of postage.
We have taken this up with the Postmaster General and asked
that a bulletin be sent to the clerks throughout the country calling
their attention particularly to this special catalog rate.
For the Information
of Our Advertisers
we desire to explain that the front
cover page will be sold to various manufacturers so that we can
alternate them. No manufacturer will be permitted to use this
space more than three times in a year. This is the usual course
followed by the best trade journals. We explain this policy so that
some manufacturers will not think that they were discriminated
against it permitting their competitor to dominate the publication.
This month the National Gum Company is in the place of honor.
This is a very fine concern and is respected by its competitors in
the trade. Next month another good manufacturer will be on this
page, so that most everybody will be given the opportunity in due
course of time.
W e Have Been
Asked to Give Our Opinion
in a discussion regarding
the proper pronunciation and spelling of the word “ vender” or
“ vendor.” Our opinion, for what it is worth, is that “ vender” is
the correct spelling for the designation of a machine, such as a
sandwich vender, peanut vender, etc.; but “ vendor” pertains to an
individual who sells or vends merchandise or other commodities.
“ Vender” then should pertain to machines or objects, whereas
“ vendor” would pertain to a person or individual. If there are
any lexicographers among our readers we will be glad to be cor
rected, if we are wrong.

Subscriptions have been pouring in nicely to THE AUTO

This shows a nation-wide interest among the operators in gaining
more information and improving their status.
