P A T E N T REVIEW
By M. P. Laughlin, Patent Attorney

The old “ fly bath” type inkwells
are fast being I'eplaced by the more
satisfactory coin operated devices au
example o f which is found in Pater t
number 1,551,667 to D. N. Jerauld
who discloses an ink
reservoir
mounted at the top o f his machine
and a conduit extending downward
through two valves to a font. The
coin slide operates the top valve and
the low er valve is manually operated.
Looks v eiy simple.

N. Camelo and T. Dombrowski
have been granted patent number 1,
552,213 and have assigned the same
to the Oneida Sani-Seat Co., Inc., of
Rome, New York. The coin con
trolled apparatus shown is released by
a chute tilted when the weight o f a
coin is applied and dispenses a sheet
from the bottom o f a pile much as
cards are dealt from a pack.

Weighing out water would be easy,
to dispense the same weights o f thick
molasses candy or other substances
which do not flow easily is sometimes
a problem. This problem has evi
dently confronted the General Motors
Company and the solution offered in
patent number 1,552,170 to the well
known inventors Charles Kettering
and Charles Lee appears novel. The
substance is held in a hopper whose
open bottom is held normally closed
by a cone adapted to be vibrated by
an alternating current electromagnet.
The discharge from the hopper is
caught in a pan at the end o f a scale

beam and a contact actuated when
the beam tilts cuts off the current to
the vibrator. Operation is started
(in their case) by a push button,

The American Cuptor Corporation
assignees o f J. V. W eckbaugh have
been granted patent number 1,552,524
fo r a blank fo r use in manufacturing
drinking cups, and presumably fo r use
in the coin actuated machines.

A shoe polishing stand having a
tread depressed by a user standing on
the stand platform and using brushes
rotating in a vertical plane is shown
in patent number 1,553,221 to George
H. Crumpton. A polish applying de
vice is also shown. The horizontal
type o f shoe polishing brush is n jw
almost a regular fixture on street cor
ners and apparently is fairly well
patronized.

George Kneuper assignor to the
Filtrine Manufacturing Company is
the inventor o f a water fountain o f
the inverted bottle type wherein the
iced compartment is provided with a
float carrying a sealing cup which
controls the flow from the bottle neck.
Also carried by the float and sur
rounding the sealing cup is a filter
cylinder through whose wall the water
coming from the bottle' passes before
reaching the iced compartment from
which it is finally discharged through
the usual faucet. The arrangement
outlined evidently permits the water
plenty o f time to percolate slowly
through the filtering material and
keeps this material always above the
water in the iced compartment. The
patent number is 1,551,572.
